Nordic Computer
Nordic Computer is working towards a more climate-conscious IT sector, and they have chosen to produce their first climate report according to the EU's new Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD).
Nordic Computer is a company based in Northern Jutland in Denmark that helps customers extend the lifespan of IT infrastructure. Through the acquisition, testing, delivery, and servicing of used professional data center equipment, existing equipment is revitalized in Europe and globally. This approach prevents the production of new equipment, which is a significant environmental benefit. Reducing the climate impact in the IT industry is therefore integrated into Nordic Computer's business model.
For some time now, Nordic Computer has been able to provide estimates of the emissions customers can prevent by purchasing used equipment and extending its lifespan. Nordic Computer's next step towards full transparency was to commission a climate report in accordance with the CSRD directive's climate standard ESRS E1, which was finalized and approved by the EU just one month earlier.
The collaboration began with a meeting where Leave a Mark's sustainability expert, Lars Olesen, presented the new climate standard, and Nordic Computer outlined their overall purpose for the climate report along with their detailed desires and needs. This formed the basis for jointly defining the project scope and an overall timeline for the project.
A significant challenge posed by the climate standard is the inclusion of Scope 3 emissions. In other words, the climate impact throughout the entire value chain must be accounted for. For Nordic Computer, this means documenting all equipment transportation and the use of equipment by customers—both crucial contributors to the overall climate impact. The climate standard also requires defining a reduction target for emissions. This is highly ambitious as it necessitates changes across the entire value chain.
Implementation of ESRS
Despite the tight timeline, Nordic Computer and Leave a Mark successfully managed these challenges together. After a three-month process, the climate report was presented and approved by the board, along with the annual financial statements.
